Paul Dinletir initially just played piano and wanted to be a songwriter and jazz pianist. His wife was able to get him into a film and television music wriCLA taught by Robert Etoll, who is now a collaborator. This led to him becoming a composer for X-Ray Dog where he composed trailers for cartoons such as Samurai Jack until season 4 and reality TV shows; from that he saw the enjoyment he got from trailer music and eventually did that full time.
Dinletirs influences are Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy; he regularly listens to soundtracks. He used Logic Pro software for 15 years and switched to Steinberg Cubase.
Kevin Rix started out playing guitar and was in various rock bands growing up. At music school, where he was introduced to classical music and jazz, he started realizing his interests in composing and in working with different instruments and sounds.
After a few years he decided to do it professionally. At first he wanted to get into writing film soundtracks. The spot came in two sections. The music requirement for the intro was for it to be slow, dark with ominous overtones. In the backend of the spot, the tempo ramps up and they wanted to hear the full melody play into an exciting finish, hitting all the key classic trailer sync points.
Every job is different and each comes with their own set of unique challenges to overcome. The main thing that I struggle with is the solitary nature of the job. Spending hours upon hours alone in the studio with no one to bounce ideas off or share thoughts with can be really tough after a while. I find that in doing this my work improves and I love doing my job even more.
I think this is a crucial lesson to learn for all aspiring composers. A well rounded life style makes for a better composer! Audiomachine have kept me very busy this year, watch this space…. Where do you find inspiration for crafting a new score? What has been your proudest professional accomplishment to date?
