With up to one million of these single-cell organisms per gallon of water, the phenomenon has been described as a soft smattering of pixie dust floating through the water. More on these later. The other bioluminescent bays are located in Jamaica and Vietnam, but a trip to Puerto Rico offers more choice and variety in bio bay activities. Venice is sinking. The Taj Mahal is close to collapsing. When Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico , it was as if someone flipped a light switch at Mosquito Bay — the water had gone dark.
An excess of rain, high winds that push the dinos out to sea, and damage to the mangroves — which provide an essential vitamin to the organisms — were to blame. The short answer? Choosing between the three bays can be a little tricky, but with these tips, you can cross that dream tour off your bucket list with ease. This bay holds the Guinness World Record as the brightest bio bay in the world, owing to the largest concentration of dinoflagellates and a helpful lack of light pollution that makes the tiny fairy lights stand out even more.
Location: Vieques Island, off the east coast of Puerto Rico. How to get there: Vieques really is a bucket-list destination — and that means putting in a little more effort to get there. Below you can see the current moon phases for this month. To best plan your trip to the bio bay, try to book a tour around new moon phases, when it is darkest at night, so you can maximize your bioluminescent bay experience.

Following are a few videos to give you an idea of the phenomenon…but you have to be here to experience it, it is magic! It is truly hard to capture on a camera and to see it first hand is an experience like no other. Puerto Rico was blessed with 3 bioluminescent bays, the brightest is in Vieques. The Vieques Bio Bay is the perfect environment for these dinos to thrive and multiply, it is shallow and the mouth of the bay is small, so the bright tiny organisms are trapped and protected in the bay, making it very, very bright.
The mangroves surrounding the bay provide the perfect nutrition for the Pyrodinium bahamense. Any changes in the delicate ecosystem can diminish the healthy balance of the bay.
The second brightest is Laguna Grande in Fajardo , and the least bright is in La Parguera in the town of Lajas due to tourist exploitation and poor conservation efforts. Otherwise, you can visit each tour company site, see what else they offer, and go through their booking process — whether instant or old school email. Depending on the time of the year, the earlier tour might still be a bit bright when you depart, giving you the opportunity to see the mangroves as you kayak in the twilight.
On the other hand, the second tour will be fully dark from start to finish. Lastly, leave your camera behind. Try to enjoy the experience without the camera. You will get wet as you paddle, so anything you carry might also get wet. So, enjoy, experience, and live the moment to the fullest without worrying about your pictures! Have you kayaked on any of the bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico? How was your experience? What a great guide with so much useful tips. Kayaking in the Puerto Rico bays sounds absolutely thrilling.

I'm excited to hear about wherever they go next! I've been living abroad for ages, but never as a digital nomad. I love hearing these ladies talk about their adventures. I'm hooked! I started listening to the podcast when Kelly and Kari were in Colombia and quickly got sucked into their workation adventures.
Not only that, but there are lots of great tips about how to work from anywhere. Good luck gringas! Not only do I love this podcast itself but I'm also mildly obsessed with the premise. I've really enjoyed listening to the ladies' journeys so far and I look forward to more Not to mention I can't wait to try something similar for myself! It did take me a few episodes to get into this podcast, once they were on the road though it was all full steam ahead.
As someone who is older than my 'late 27's' and having lived away from my home country for 14 years it is great to get a perspective of those who are a few years younger and getting on the road in a slightly different way. Honest, funny and NSFW.
I look forward to hearing about adventures in future locations. Happy to discover this funny, down to earth podcast about two women living nomadic lifestyles AND working. It's got a lot of heart and am excited to hear more. This podcast is different from your traditional one-on-one interviews and it makes it unique in that sense.
As a digital nomad, I love this podcast! It's always great to hear from people who are living life the same as me! Love what these two ladies are doing to show us how digital and global the world is. Can't wait tl listen to more episodes. The concept of the "digital nomad"--of living and working from wherever you want to--is very attractive. Once the province only of Eurotrash and "Lost Generation" types with trust funds, it's amazing to learn how affordable this all is.
Love the pddcast. Part how-to, part how-not-to. I love listening to these ladies on my lunch break! They are so funny and inspiring. I am excited to follow them on their journey! I have been working from home for the past 15 years. I travel a lot of work but Workationing is a different spin on this. This idea totally makes sense. I love hearing more about the ideas and believe that more people should take advantage of this.
Always looking forward to the new episodes. These two ladies are crack me up with their quirky tangents and personal anecdotes. Listening to each and every one of these episodes have been time well spent in my opinion.

It's hilarious! I love the chemisty between these two ladies. Plus, there are some great travel tips. Can't wait for the next episode. I really enjoy the Workationing podcast. Rarely do I laugh as much as I did listing to the episodes. Kari and Kelly are a team of digital nomads, traveling the world while running a thriving startup. Warning: the podcast is addictive. The girls are super funny, smart, and have a ton of advice about traveling and the start up life.
A lot of us telecommute because we like the flexibility of being to work from anywhere, but "anywhere" usually means at home in our PJs. In the Workationing Podcast, you get to see what life is like for those who take their office-free worklife to the next level. Funny, upbeat, and interesting, Kari and Kelly take you along on their worldwide tour and share tips, tricks and an occasional cautionary tale for aspiring digital nomads.
I just keep saying it when I tell people about Workationing, but this show is so fun--and informative--with two gals that are on a pretty new type of adventure. Love it! Come along with two ladies as they adventure around the globe and discuss how to get the most out of life, work and enjoyment.
